ROUTE 5

Fuente Arenaza juniper wood and gorges

Location and access: Southern province. In the center of the province, near the river Duero, the village of Recuerda would be the route of entry of these spaces and Mosarejos / Galapagares close the area to the south. The SO-100 is reached Berlanga de Duero and, from there, the SO-152 to Recuerda. It can also access this location from the Burgo de Osma by the SO-160.

Status: No protection figure appears in this space.

Terrain: Small limestone guns -dry- excavated by the Arroyo de la Fuente Arenaza, between vast forests of junipers.

Means of access: The only way to approach these two peoples is by our own means, since there is no public transport.

Difficulty: Limited. There is good network of roads and trails that will allow us to explore the different proposals.

Visit duration: Variable, depending on our interest, although the proposed itinerary, round-trip journey can take us 5 to 6 hours.

Timing: Spring and autumn are the ideal times to observe the most typical birds. Winter can bring interesting observations of wintering birds, as linked to both the juniper forest and canyons.

Comments: This is one of the most unknown areas of the province of Soria. towns like Mosarejos, Galapagares, Brías, Abanco ... people who are not abandoned, but almost. Existing services in the same, thus, they are null.

Proposed itineraries

where to see birds

Rivers and streams, flow usually little or practically dry, that cross this territory have led to the abundance of small limestone gorges that are the natural habitat of numerous species of birds. Unlike other rocky canyons located more to the south of the province in areas of moorland, these are immersed in one of the most extensive forests of junipers in this sector of the central Duero river.

Here we propose two options

1 The main route follows the course of the arroyo de la Fuente Arenaza, which is not too difficult for him because runs, some years ago, a step of the path of travel, the GR86. The path would begin in Recuerda until Galapagares, we can we do from the first village or take longer, when it leaves the crop area and goes into the juniper forest.

If we want to extend the tour and walk the best is juniper forests, once in Galapagares, take the road to the northeast would come to Morales, but long before, about three kilometers, turn onto a path that would take us to Recuerda.

2 Another interesting option, if you have little time and want to take a general look at the area is stopping on the road to the little crown the highest among Recuerda and Mosarejos, between kilometers 20 and 21. There, with the recent arrangement of the track, It has expanded a curve and left a stretch of the old road which allows us access to the highest part of the canyon. The only caveat here is not to stay too long, be discreet and not frighten potential bird watching can be just below us.

where to see birds

A Morales juniper woods. Morales in the environment, between the town and the Duero river, some thickets of junipers that have managed to survive the thrust of the crops are located. In these forests we can see the same bird species that already mentioned previously for these spaces.

Our recommendation goes through the existence of the copy of some fantastic juniper tree. There is a particular, called "La Pica" by countrymen that is contained in the catalog of their trees notables in the province of Soria. It is juniper tree about 15 meters high and 3 meter perimeter, in good health condition. Beside it there are some upcoming, smaller, but a good size too. The proximity of the Duero river makes the catalog of birds is much larger than the juniper woods located south.

B Valpierle and Pradejón gorges. Limestones in this sector, converge other small gorges created by the stream of Pradejón, Valpierle the brook and river Talegones, in its final stretch. They are long streams with small crags, but with abundant bird life.

It accessed by a track in very good condition from Berlanga de Duero leaving us to the edge of the two gorges after crossing the river Talegones. Just one kilometer from here the carrion dump of Berlanga de Duero is located, as it is evident in the number species that rest or breed here and the opportunity to observe other species. Here we see with some regularity Black vulture and he cited in 2015 Spanish imperial eagle. In all the gorges there are couples of all species of rocks birds that breed in Soria.

Seasons of the year

to see the birds

The Eurasian eagle owl It is very present in the environment and now occupies corners makes 20 from 30 years. No wonder found in areas apparently unsuitable, Using the solitudes of our fields. In December males begin to sing.

The natural viewpoint formed on the old road is ideal place to see the vultures in their lairs and walls, with his first copulations, small flocks of Rock sparrow, Red-billed chough, the increasingly scarce Western jackdaw and , fairly lucky, detecting the Alpine accentor.

From this point also he looked until a few years to a couple Golden Eagle with one of their nests located in nearby crags. Nevertheless, the couple has disappeared, without the reasons are known.

If the year is good berry we can see the four species of thrush in Spain: Redwing, Fieldfare, Mistle thrush and Song thrush.

Of these only Mistle thrush It will be all year in these juniper woods.

The birds of these rocky crags coincides with that of other similar routes. As spring progresses will arrive the Crag martins, some Blue rock thrush, the couple of Egyptian vulture and the Rufous-tailed rock thrush. In April frequently see Ring ouzel. In the junier wood highlights warblers since it is the places where Soria Western orphean warbler and the Subalpine warbler they have higher densities. also Dartford warbler It is common in less dense areas of bushes and / or mixed with slopes steppe and gorse. In recent years it has become common Sardinian warbler, quite rare in the province of Soria and that this area remains one of its main bastions.

Also abounds Bonelli's warbler and as color element present to a lesser extent, the Common redstart.
